Fire Fighting System - Part 2
FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEM – PART 2
Fire hydrant systems are installed in buildings to help firefighters quickly attack the fire. Essentially, a hydrant system is a water reticulation system used to transport water in order to limit the amount of hose that firefighters have to lay; thus speeding up the fire fighting process
Sprinkler systems installed by sprinkler fitters can include the
underground supply as well as integrated overhead piping systems and
standpipes. The fire suppression
piping may contain water, air (in a dry system), antifreeze, gas or chemicals
as in a hood system, or a mixture producing fire retardant foam.
Passive fire protection
- the installation of firewalls and fire
rated floor assemblies to form fire
compartments intended to limit the spread of fire, high temperatures, and smoke. Active fire protection - manual and automatic detection and suppression of fires, such as fire sprinkler systems and (fire
alarm) systems.
Fire safety is the
set of practices intended to reduce the destruction caused by fire. Fire safety measures include those that are intended to prevent
ignition of an uncontrolled fire,
and those that are used to limit the development and effects of a fire after it starts.
A jockey pump is a pump connected to a fire sprinkler system and is intended to maintain pressure in a fire protection piping system to an artificially high level so that the operation of a single fire sprinkler will cause a pressure drop which will be sensed by the fire pump automatic controller, causing the fire pump ...
Fire hydrant pump
systems (also known as fire
pumps, hydrant boosters, fire
water pumps) are high pressure water pumps designed to increase the fire
fighting capacity of a building by boosting the pressure in the hydrant service when mains is not
enough, or when tank fed.
A booster pump is
a machine which will increase the pressure of a fluid. ... A gas booster is similar to a gas
compressor, but generally a simpler mechanism which often has only a single
stage of compression, and is used to increase pressure of a gas already above
ambient pressure.
Known as NFPA 291, it says fire hydrants using public water supply systems should be painted chrome yellow, and their tops and caps should indicate the available GPM. Below 500GPM should be red, 500-999 GPM should be orange, 1000-1499 GPM should be green, and 1500 GPM or more should be blue.Jan 9, 2013
Chemical products which react with the fuel can be used to stop
the combustion. A layer of water-based fire retardant foam can be applied by
the fire hose in order to separate the oxygen in the air from the fuel. carbon dioxide, halon, or sodium bicarbonate can be used
